Woods Hole
Woods Hole is a small village, surrounded on three sides by water, with a pond in its center. It is named after an important nearby water passage, Woods Hole Passage, joining Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay. The village is home to a mixture of year round and summer vacation uses, commercial fishing, ferries to Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket, US Coast Guard Northeast Command Center and three marine science laboratories. The best known lab here is the Oceanographic Institute, renowned for finding the Titanic with the deep diving research submarine "Alvin".
In the summer, Woods Hole bustles with visitors, shoppers, scientists, residents, and passengers waiting for the next ferry to the islands. With so many interesting things to see and do, Woods Hole is a perfect day trip for the whole family.
We strongly recommend you take the "WHOOSH" trolley from Falmouth or use the "Shining Sea Bike Path", since there is barely enough parking for the locals who work there. Food: There are a number of restaurants ranging from atmospheric fine dining establishments to places for sandwiches, ice cream and snacks.
We can recommend: Fishmonger Café Landfall Restaurant Leeside Bar & Grill Shucker's The Captain Kidd
Shopping for gifts, souvenirs and necessities: You will pass many shops as you take a walk through the village, offering local arts and crafts, guide books and maps, postcards and tee shirts as well as necessities.
Interesting things for kids and adults:
Watching the boats come through the narrow drawbridge on Water Street which opens every half hour is a popular pastime.
The aquarium with seals in the outside tank and an invitation to sit behind the scenes, is the most popular destination.
The WHOI exhibit center will give you glimpses of the Titanic, as well as the biology and geology of the deep sea.
The Woods Hole Historical Museum has a scale model of the old village and a new building housing several historic local sail boats.
